Bone cancer surgery (limb salvage)

Surgery that removes a bone or soft tissue tumour while saving the arm or leg, instead of amputating it.

Pending doctor check

What it is

The tumour is removed with a margin of healthy tissue, and the missing bone is rebuilt with a metal implant (endoprosthesis), bone from a bone bank, or the patient's own bone. Most people with bone cancer today keep their limb. Chemotherapy is often given before and after surgery.

Who needs it

Children and adults with bone cancers such as osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma, soft tissue sarcomas, some non-cancerous but aggressive bone tumours, and cancer that has spread to bone.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 5 to 10 days in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Usually 6 to 12 weeks, with physiotherapy to walk or use the arm again.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Will I lose my leg?

In most cases, no. Limb salvage is possible for most bone tumours. The surgeon tells you after reviewing your scans.

How long does the implant last?

Many last many years. Some may need replacing later, especially in children who are still growing.
