Bone marrow transplant (stem cell transplant)

A treatment that replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells, used for some blood cancers and blood disorders.

Pending doctor check

What it is

First, strong chemotherapy, sometimes with radiation, clears the diseased marrow. Then healthy stem cells are given through a drip, much like a blood transfusion, and settle in the bones to make new blood. The cells come from the patient (autologous), from a matched donor (allogeneic), or from a half-matched family member (haploidentical), which means most patients can find a donor.

Who needs it

People with some blood cancers, such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and some blood disorders, such as thalassaemia, sickle cell disease and aplastic anaemia, in adults and in children.

Typical hospital stay
About 30 days at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Plan to stay in India for about 2 to 3 months after the transplant for close follow-up. The immune system takes 6 to 12 months to recover fully.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Who can be my donor?

A brother or sister is checked first. If none is a full match, a half-matched parent, child or sibling can often donate. Testing is done before you travel or soon after you arrive.

Does the donor need surgery?

Usually not. Most stem cells today are collected from the donor's blood through a drip, over a few hours.
