Breast cancer surgery

An operation to remove breast cancer, with the breast kept or rebuilt wherever possible.

Pending doctor check

What it is

Where it is safe, only the tumour and a margin around it are removed (breast-conserving surgery), and the breast is reshaped in the same operation (oncoplastic surgery). Where the whole breast must be removed (mastectomy), it can often be rebuilt. The lymph nodes in the armpit are checked, usually with a small sampling operation. A vacuum-assisted biopsy can be used to diagnose or remove small lumps without open surgery.

Who needs it

Women, and occasionally men, with breast cancer, and people with a strong family history who may benefit from genetic testing.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 1 to 3 days in hospital, longer with reconstruction. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Usually 2 to 4 weeks. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone tablets may follow, depending on the report.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Can I keep my breast?

Often, yes, especially when the tumour is small compared with the breast, or after chemotherapy shrinks it. The surgeon advises after reviewing your scans.

Should I have genetic testing?

If you were diagnosed young or have close relatives with breast or ovarian cancer, testing may help plan your treatment. The doctor advises.
