Cancer surgery (surgical oncology)

An operation to remove a tumour and, where needed, nearby tissue or lymph nodes.

Pending doctor check

What it is

A surgical oncologist removes the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue, and often the nearby lymph nodes to check for spread. Where it suits the case, it is done by keyhole (laparoscopic) or robotic surgery, which usually means smaller cuts and a quicker recovery. The removed tissue is examined to plan any further treatment.

Who needs it

People with solid tumours, such as head and neck, breast, stomach, bowel, liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, prostate, womb, ovary, bone and soft tissue cancers.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 2 to 10 days in hospital, depending on the operation. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
From 2 weeks for smaller operations to 6 to 8 weeks for major ones. Plan to stay in India until the stitches are checked and the report is discussed.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Will I need other treatment after surgery?

Sometimes. The report on the removed tissue shows whether chemotherapy or radiotherapy would help. The team discusses this with you before you go home.

Can it be done by robotic surgery?

For many cancers, yes. The surgeon decides based on the tumour and your scans.
