Chemotherapy

Medicines that kill cancer cells or stop them growing, given by drip, injection or tablet over a series of sessions.

Pending doctor check

What it is

A medical oncologist chooses the medicines, dose and timing for the type and stage of cancer. Treatment is usually given in cycles, with rest weeks in between so the body can recover. It can be given before surgery to shrink a tumour, after surgery to lower the chance of it coming back, or on its own.

Who needs it

People with many kinds of cancer, including breast, lung, bowel, ovarian, head and neck, blood and bone cancers. Your oncologist decides whether it suits your case.

Typical hospital stay
Most sessions are day care: you come in, have the drip and go home the same day.
Recovery time
Tiredness and other side effects usually ease within days to weeks of each cycle. A full course often takes 3 to 6 months.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Do I need to stay in India for the whole course?

Not always. Often the first cycles are given in India and the rest can continue at home, with the plan shared with your local oncologist.

Will I lose my hair?

With some medicines, yes, and it usually grows back after treatment. Many modern medicines do not cause hair loss.
