Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

A small device placed under the skin sends mild electrical signals to part of the brain, used for some movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

Pending doctor check

What it is

Thin wires are placed in a precise spot deep in the brain and connected to a small battery under the skin of the chest, like a pacemaker. The signals calm the faulty brain activity that causes shaking and stiffness. Settings are adjusted over the following weeks.

Who needs it

People with Parkinson's disease whose medicines no longer control their symptoms well, and some people with tremor or dystonia.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 3 to 5 days in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Usually 2 to 4 weeks, with settings tuned over a few visits.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Can the settings be changed after I go home?

Yes. Settings can be adjusted at later visits, and many devices can be checked by a neurologist at home.
