Dialysis (haemodialysis and haemodiafiltration)

A machine cleans the blood when the kidneys can no longer do it, usually in sessions of about four hours, three times a week.

Pending doctor check

What it is

Blood is passed through a filter outside the body that removes waste and extra fluid, then returned. Haemodiafiltration is a more thorough form of the same treatment. Sessions can also be done overnight (nocturnal dialysis) for some patients.

Who needs it

People whose kidneys have failed, including those waiting for a transplant, and patients already on dialysis who need it while they are in India for treatment.

Typical hospital stay
Usually done as a day patient: you come in for each session and go home the same day.
Recovery time
Most people feel tired for a few hours after a session. Dialysis continues for as long as the kidneys do not work, or until a transplant.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

I am already on dialysis. Can I continue it in India?

Yes. Send us your current dialysis details and we book your sessions at the hospital for the whole of your stay.

Does dialysis replace a transplant?

No. Dialysis does part of the kidneys' work. A transplant, where suitable, usually gives a better quality of life. The nephrologist advises which suits you.
