Stomach, bowel and food pipe cancer surgery

Surgery to remove cancers of the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach, small bowel, colon and rectum.

Pending doctor check

What it is

The part of the gut with the cancer is removed with its lymph nodes, and the ends are joined again. Most of these operations can be done by keyhole or robotic surgery. For rectal cancer, the surgeon aims to keep normal bowel control wherever possible.

Who needs it

People with cancer of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon or rectum, and some abdominal tumours such as sarcomas.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 5 to 10 days in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Usually 4 to 8 weeks. Eating returns slowly, with advice from a dietitian.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Will I need a bag (stoma)?

Not always. Sometimes a temporary stoma protects the join while it heals, and is closed a few months later. The surgeon tells you before the operation.

Will I need chemotherapy too?

Often, before or after surgery, depending on the stage. The team plans it together.
