Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG, open heart surgery)

Heart bypass surgery: a blood vessel from elsewhere in the body is used to route blood around a narrowed or blocked artery of the heart.

Pending doctor check

What it is

A healthy blood vessel is taken from the chest, arm or leg and joined to the heart artery beyond the blockage, so blood flows around it. It can be done with the heart beating (off-pump) or with a heart-lung machine, and in some patients through smaller cuts.

Who needs it

People with several blocked heart arteries, a blocked main artery, or diabetes with heart artery disease, and those for whom stenting is not suitable.

Typical hospital stay
About 7 to 9 days: 3 to 5 in intensive care, depending on risk, and 4 on the ward at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Most people return to light activity in 4 to 6 weeks and full activity in about 3 months. Plan to stay in India for about 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.
