Heart valve replacement

An operation or catheter procedure that replaces a heart valve that is too narrow or leaks, with a mechanical or tissue valve.

Pending doctor check

What it is

The faulty valve is repaired where possible, or replaced with a mechanical valve (which lasts very long but needs blood thinners for life) or a tissue valve. Some patients can have a new valve placed through a tube in the leg (TAVI) instead of open surgery.

Who needs it

People with a narrowed or leaking heart valve causing breathlessness, chest pain, tiredness or fainting, often after rheumatic fever or from age.

Typical hospital stay
About 7 days for one valve: 3 in intensive care and 4 on the ward at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Usually 6 to 8 weeks for open surgery, less with minimally invasive or catheter methods. Plan to stay in India for about 2 to 3 weeks.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Mechanical or tissue valve?

Mechanical valves last longer but need daily blood thinners. Tissue valves avoid this but may wear out after 10 to 20 years. The surgeon helps you choose.

Can my valve be repaired instead?

Often, especially leaking mitral valves. Repair is preferred where possible.
