Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC

Surgery that removes all visible cancer from inside the belly, followed by heated chemotherapy washed through the belly during the same operation.

Pending doctor check

What it is

The surgeon removes every visible tumour from the lining of the belly (cytoreductive surgery). Then, while still in theatre, heated chemotherapy is circulated through the belly for about an hour (HIPEC) to treat cancer cells too small to see. Heat helps the medicine work better, and little of it reaches the rest of the body.

Who needs it

Selected people with cancer that has spread to the lining of the belly (peritoneum) from the ovary, bowel, appendix or stomach, and people with peritoneal mesothelioma or pseudomyxoma.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 10 to 14 days in hospital, with a few days in intensive care. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Usually 6 to 12 weeks. Plan to stay in India for about 4 weeks after surgery.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Is everyone with spread to the belly suitable?

No. The team reviews your scans and health to see whether all the visible cancer can be removed, which is when HIPEC helps most.

Is it a long operation?

Yes, often 8 to 12 hours. It is done only in specialised centres with experienced teams.
