Liver, pancreas and bile duct cancer surgery (including Whipple)

Surgery to remove cancers of the liver, pancreas, bile duct and gall bladder, including the Whipple operation for the pancreas.

Pending doctor check

What it is

Part of the liver can be removed safely, and what remains grows back. For cancer at the head of the pancreas, the Whipple operation (pancreaticoduodenectomy) removes it with part of the bowel and bile duct, then reconnects them. Where tumours involve major blood vessels, these can be removed and rebuilt in the same operation. Many of these operations can be done by keyhole or robotic surgery.

Who needs it

People with cancers of the liver, bile duct, gall bladder or pancreas, and cancers that have spread to the liver from the bowel, after scans show the tumour can be removed.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 7 to 14 days in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Usually 6 to 8 weeks. Plan to stay in India for about 3 to 4 weeks after surgery.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.
