Hydrocephalus treatment (VP shunt and ETV)

Treatment for fluid building up in the brain, by draining it with a shunt or opening a new path with an endoscope.

Pending doctor check

What it is

A VP shunt is a thin tube that drains extra fluid from the brain to the belly. In endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), a camera is used to make a small opening so the fluid can flow on its own.

Who needs it

Babies, children and adults with hydrocephalus, from birth, a tumour, bleeding or infection.

Typical hospital stay
About 4 days for a VP shunt: 1 in intensive care and 3 on the ward at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Most people return to normal activity in 2 to 4 weeks.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.
