Hormone injections help the ovaries produce several eggs, which are collected in a short procedure under sedation. They are mixed with sperm in the laboratory, and after a few days one embryo is placed in the womb through a thin tube. Spare embryos can be frozen.
Who needs it
Couples who have not conceived after trying, including with blocked tubes, low egg reserve, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility.

- Most women return to normal activity the day after each procedure. One cycle takes about 3 to 4 weeks in India; a pregnancy test follows about 2 weeks after transfer.
