Kidney transplant

An operation that places a healthy kidney from a donor into a person whose own kidneys have stopped working.

Pending doctor check

What it is

A healthy kidney from a donor is placed in the lower belly and joined to the blood vessels and the bladder. The person's own kidneys are usually left where they are. The donor is most often a living family member; where the blood groups do not match, a swap (paired) transplant with another family can sometimes make it possible. Afterwards the patient takes medicines every day so the body does not reject the new kidney.

Who needs it

People whose kidneys have failed (end-stage kidney disease), whether or not they have started dialysis, who are fit enough for an operation and have a suitable donor.

Typical hospital stay
About 8 days: 3 in intensive care and 5 on the ward at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Most people return to light daily life in 4 to 6 weeks. Plan to stay in India for about 4 to 6 weeks after the operation for close checks and blood tests.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Can a family member from my country be the donor?

Yes. Indian law allows living donation by close relatives, and the hospital's authorisation committee reviews every donor's documents before the transplant. We help you prepare these papers before you travel.

What if my donor's blood group does not match?

A swap (paired) transplant with another family, or a transplant across blood groups with extra treatment beforehand, may be possible. The transplant team decides after testing.
