Liver tumour embolisation (TACE and TARE)

Through a pinhole in the groin or wrist, a fine tube is guided to the artery feeding a liver tumour, and chemotherapy (TACE) or tiny radioactive beads (TARE) are delivered straight into it.

Pending doctor check

What it is

An interventional radiologist guides a fine tube through an artery to the liver using X-ray imaging. In TACE (chemoembolisation), chemotherapy is delivered into the tumour and its blood supply is blocked. In TARE (radioembolisation), tiny beads carrying radiation are delivered instead. There is no open surgery, only a pinhole.

Who needs it

People with liver cancer, or cancer that has spread to the liver, that cannot be removed by surgery, or as a bridge to surgery or a transplant.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 1 to 2 days in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Most people feel tired, with some pain or fever, for about a week, then return to normal life.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Is it painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic and sedation. Some pain and fever afterwards is common and is treated with medicines.

Will I need more than one session?

Sometimes. A scan after about 4 to 6 weeks shows how the tumour has responded.
