Pancreas transplant

An operation that places a healthy pancreas from a donor into a person with diabetes, so their body makes its own insulin again. It is often done together with a kidney transplant.

What it is

A pancreas from a deceased donor is placed in the lower belly and joined to the blood vessels and the bowel or bladder. The person's own pancreas stays in place. When the new pancreas works, insulin injections are no longer needed. It is often done at the same time as a kidney transplant.

Who needs it

Mainly people with type 1 diabetes: those who no longer feel the warning signs of a dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia unawareness), those who develop kidney, nerve or eye damage despite insulin, and those who also have chronic kidney disease. Some people with type 2 diabetes are also suitable. Diabetes with kidney disease is serious: the risk of death is about twice that of kidney disease alone, average survival is about 4 to 5 years, and around 16 years of life are lost.

Typical hospital stay
Usually about 2 to 3 weeks in hospital, longer when done with a kidney transplant. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Plan to stay in India for about 2 to 3 months. Anti-rejection medicines are taken for life.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Is there a waiting time?

Yes. The pancreas comes from a deceased donor, so there is a waiting list. The team explains how it works for international patients.

Will I still need insulin?

If the new pancreas works well, no. Your doctors check your blood sugar closely in the first weeks.
