Targeted therapy and immunotherapy

Newer cancer medicines that attack a specific weakness in the cancer, or help the body's own immune system fight it.

What it is

Tests on the tumour look for changes in its genes or proteins. Targeted medicines block those changes, so they act mainly on cancer cells. Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise and attack the cancer. These are often called precision or molecular oncology, and are given by drip or as tablets.

Who needs it

People whose cancer shows a matching change on testing, or whose cancer type is known to respond, such as some lung, breast, kidney, bowel, skin and head and neck cancers.

Typical hospital stay
Usually day care, or tablets taken at home.
Recovery time
Most people continue their normal daily life during treatment, with regular checks and scans.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

How do I know if it suits me?

Your oncologist looks at your tumour test results. If testing has not been done, it can often be done on the biopsy you already have.

Is it the same as chemotherapy?

No. It works in a different way and usually has different, often milder, side effects. Sometimes it is given together with chemotherapy.
