Tumour ablation (radiofrequency and microwave)

A needle guided by a scan destroys a small tumour with heat, without open surgery.

Pending doctor check

What it is

Using ultrasound or CT, an interventional radiologist places a thin needle into the tumour through the skin. The needle heats the tumour with radio waves or microwaves until it is destroyed. It takes about an hour, leaves only a pinhole, and can be repeated.

Who needs it

People with small tumours in the liver, kidney, lung or bone, especially those not suited to surgery.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 1 day in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Most people return to normal activity within a few days.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Is it as good as surgery?

For some small tumours the results are close to surgery. The team advises which suits your tumour.

How will I know it worked?

A scan, usually about a month later, checks that the whole tumour has been treated.
