Depending on the problem, the retina is treated with laser, with injections into the eye, or with vitrectomy: the gel inside the eye is removed so the surgeon can repair the retina. A detached retina is put back in place and held with gas or oil.
Who needs it
People with a detached or torn retina, bleeding inside the eye, diabetic eye disease, a macular hole or age-related macular degeneration.

- Usually a day procedure; sometimes one night in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
- Recovery time
- Recovery depends on the operation. After vitrectomy you may need to hold your head in one position for some days, and you cannot fly while there is gas in the eye. Plan to stay in India for about 2 to 3 weeks.
