Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF)

Through a small cut at the front of the neck, a damaged disc pressing on the nerves or spinal cord is removed and the bones either side are joined.

Pending doctor check

What it is

The surgeon reaches the spine from the front of the neck, removes the worn or slipped disc and any bone spurs pressing on the nerves, and places a small spacer so the two bones grow together.

Who needs it

People with arm pain, numbness or weakness, or problems with balance and hand use, from a slipped or worn disc in the neck.

Typical hospital stay
About 4 days: 1 in intensive care and 3 on the ward at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Most people return to light activity in 2 to 4 weeks.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

Is a disc replacement better?

For some people, a disc replacement keeps movement in the neck instead of joining the bones. The surgeon advises which suits you.

Will I have trouble swallowing?

A mild sore throat or difficulty swallowing for a few days is common and usually settles quickly.
