Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)

Keyhole surgery that removes a large part of the stomach, leaving a narrow sleeve, so a person feels full sooner.

Pending doctor check

What it is

About three quarters of the stomach is removed by keyhole surgery, leaving a narrow tube. The smaller stomach holds less food and makes less of the hormone that causes hunger.

Who needs it

Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of about 35 or more, or 30 or more with diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea, after diet and exercise have not worked. Thresholds can be lower for people of Asian origin.

Typical hospital stay
Usually 2 to 3 days in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Most people return to desk work in 1 to 2 weeks, moving from liquids to normal food over about 6 weeks.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.
