Hand transplant

An operation that attaches one or both hands from a deceased donor to a person who has lost theirs, joining bone, blood vessels, tendons, nerves and skin.

Pending doctor check

What it is

A hand transplant moves skin, muscle, tendon, bone, blood vessels and nerves together, which is why it is called a composite tissue transplant. Surgeons fix the bones, join the arteries and veins, repair the tendons and connect the nerves. Afterwards the patient takes medicine to stop the body rejecting the new hands, and has long-term physiotherapy. When it succeeds, a hand transplant can bring back feeling, a sense of position and coordinated movement beyond what a prosthetic hand can give.

Who needs it

People who have lost one or both hands or arms, after careful medical, psychological and immune testing. A suitable donor has to be found, so there is usually a waiting period.

Typical hospital stay
Usually about 3 to 4 weeks in hospital. Your hospital confirms it for your case.
Recovery time
Plan to stay in India for about 3 to 6 months for daily hand therapy. Movement and feeling keep improving for one to two years as the nerves grow.

What affects the cost

Every patient gets their own estimate, in writing, from the hospital. These are the things that move it.

  1. 01

    The hospital and the city

Room types, equipment and running costs differ from one hospital to the next.

  2. 02

    The doctor

A surgeon's fee follows their experience and how complex the operation is.

  3. 03

    The technique and the materials

Keyhole or robotic surgery, and the make of any implant, can change the price.

  4. 04

    Your health

Other conditions, earlier treatment and the tests you need before treatment all count.

  5. 05

    How long you stay

Days in hospital, any time in intensive care and the weeks you spend recovering in India.

  6. 06

    What else you need

Physiotherapy, medicines to take home and follow-up visits are added only if your doctor asks for them.

The estimate is not final until the doctor has examined you in India. If anything changes, we explain it before you agree to it.

Questions about this treatment

How soon can I use the new hand?

Simple movements usually start within weeks. Feeling and finer control come back slowly over months, with daily therapy.

Will I need medicines for life?

Yes. Like any transplant, it needs anti-rejection medicines every day, and regular checks.
